Cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related deaths among women in India. Globally, India contributes to 25% of cervical cancer deaths.
There are ways to prevent women against cervical cancer. This January, let's do our bit in learning more about this disease and the ways we can screen for, and prevent this cancer.

Understanding Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is often linked to persistent infection with high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
Cervical Cancer Statistics in India

Prevention: A Powerful Shield
HPV Vaccination
Targeted Vaccination: Encourage young girls and women to get vaccinated against high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) strains. The HPV vaccine is most effective when administered before sexual activity begins.
Vaccination Programs: Support and promote national or regional HPV vaccination programs initiated by healthcare authorities.
Safe Sexual Practices
Condom Use: Promote consistent and correct use of condoms during sexual activity to reduce the risk of HPV transmission.
Regular Health Check-ups
Pap Smears: Advocate for regular Pap smears or Pap tests. This screening method helps detect abnormal cells in the cervix early on, allowing for prompt intervention.
HPV Testing: Consider HPV testing as part of routine screenings, especially for women over 30. HPV testing can identify high-risk strains of the virus that may lead to cervical cancer.
Clinical Examinations
Pelvic Exams: Regular clinical examinations by healthcare professionals, including pelvic exams, can help identify any abnormalities or changes in the cervix that may indicate the early stages of cervical cancer.
Preventing cervical cancer involves a collaborative effort between individuals, healthcare providers, and communities. By promoting awareness, encouraging vaccination and screenings, and fostering a culture of open communication about women's health, we can work towards reducing the incidence of cervical cancer in India.
The Significance of Awareness
Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is not just a symbolic observance; it is a call to action. Awareness is a powerful tool that can:
Break Stigmas: Open conversations and awareness campaigns contribute to breaking stigmas surrounding women's health issues.
Encourage Screenings: Increased awareness motivates women to prioritize regular screenings, leading to early detection and better outcomes.
